What to bring
- Something warm. The walk up will be hot, but once the sun sets or the wind picks up you’ll want a jersey.
- Sunblock and hats. There’s pretty much no shade apart from a handful of silver trees and two lonely pines so make sure you have good sun protection.
- Hiking shoes. There’s a bit of climbing once you reach the so wear shoes with good grip.
- Water and treats. Take a bottle each and one extra as a precaution, it’s worth carrying the extra weight to avoid dehydrated. Also take something to treat yourself with once you’ve reached the top - chocolate is always good, or make a meal of it and have a snack supper while you watch the sunset.
- Camera. The panoramic views are incredible and you’ll want to catch the golden afternoon light.
- Children from age 10 and up
- Torches. Don’t bank on the moon’s light to get down, bring a torch just in case it’s hiding behind a cloud.
- Dogs must be kept on their leashes and will need to go the roundabout way to skip the chains; unless they’re small enough to be carried up.
Routes
Both routes start out from Signal Hill Road, and there’s usually enough parking to get a spot right at the start. On busy days you may need to park and walk along the road. There are security guards that watch the cars however they may not be there if you come down late. There has been crime reported on Lion’s Head so go in a big group and don’t carry valuables.
