http://www.wheels24.co.za/NewModels/For ... A-20121005I thinks statement! Only thing the smaller motor would result in is reduced production cost and economy! How would it make it improve performance? Lol a more efficient engine will produce more power stock for stock, the new 4 cyl ST makes more power than the old 5cyl ST Some unconfirmed local dyno results show the new ST making 180ish WKW

I agree but my point is if the same tech was to go into the "old" 5 cyl setup it would have a much better outcome performance wise and I'm not sure how the fuel economy would be but ja... Just because its new doesnt also mean it's better. Right now decisions are based mostly on production cost and maximising profits.

Just because its new doesnt also mean it's better. Right now decisions are based mostly on production cost and maximising profits. The 5 cyl had its fair share of drawbacks. Technology moves on. Why wouldnt they move to the tried and tested 4cyl turbo option if its a) cheaper to make, b)makes more power, c)lighter and more efficient As it stands right now, the newer motor is better than the older motor. Lots of criticism was leveled at the older 5 cyl for being too heavy (thus making the car nose heavy), not fuel efficient enough compared to its 4cyl turbo competitors, and lets not forget the numerous boost leak and heat soak issues... It sounded great tho, and in RS form is hard to beat... Its the same as how most manufactures moved from N/A motors to Turbo Motors. They got better power, torque, economy, reliability (debatable) etc etc

Volvo in Sweden designed and developed the 5cyliner engine even before Ford took them over. Ford bought the company $6.5Billion in ’99 and 2010 sold Volvo for $1.8 Billion to Geely.

I see the Focus ST has already been dyno'd at more than 184kw. Ford pulling a VW on us like they did with the GTI.

200kw that’s impressive. The Golf R did the same right. I’m speaking under correction, but on that basis it looks like 2L turbo cars at the coast produce 8 -9 % more power than factory figures/claims.

CAR and Topcar tested the ST. Got it to 100kph in 6.5s and 6.8s respectively (CAR tests with a passenger and all equipment) and very good overtaking acceleration.
