Hi guys

I've had my Corsa since 2009. Got her as a very generous gift from my step dad (come to think of it, I think it was a bribe so he could marry my mom with my approval)

So far I've got a branch and 50 - 57mm Powerflow freeflow and a K&N flat filter.

The plan for the near future is to have a Z18XE motor fitted in standard form to hopefully be reliable.

I'll try my utmost to do a detailed thread of this process when it starts. :winkithumbs:

I've wanted this conversion since I got the car, and I've never had the money to do it. And I completely agree with you. Reliability will be leaving the car as is.

I had a Ford Anglia for a while, and that was my toy until I ripped it apart and then found myself wondering WTF I had just done. I sold that

Thanks for the advice guys. But I've decided to go on this venture, and I'm 100% sure that the club will support me all the way

I'll try my best Jason. I doubt that I'll be doing this conversion myself as I have absolutely no space at home and I've got minimal tools and minimal time. And I can't k@k myself out when I vark it up. So I'm hoping my mechanic can comfortably do this conversion for me with confidence. I know it will be costly but if the job is done properly I'm happy to pay for it. But there will be photo's and I'll make it as detailed as I can

That's a valid question CA. Anybody selling a Z18XE motor maybe? Or know of anybody that is?
I got a quote from Goodwood used motors for R10 500 and Mike's place quoted me R8400

I got the quote from two mechanics this morning. Here's the details:

My usual mechanic that I've been going to for 3 years.

He'll source the motor for me, replace my clutch with a 210mm clutch and flywheel, the the necessary mods to the computer box meaning I won't need management right away, I'll be running the standard 1.8 map. He's going to replace my radiator with the 1.7D bakkie radiator. He'll do the engine mounting, replace the throttle body with the 1.6 throttle and make the adaptor plate for it, BUT, he's never done this conversion before although he's been racing on Killarney with his son using Opels only for a very long time (RGR Racing). R22k

A friend of a friend is a mechanic at Reeds N1 City and he has does this conversion before. He'll go with me to choose the motor, he'll source all the other parts for me but I have to leave work to go fetch them. He's only going to work on the car in his spare time. He isn't going to replace the clutch and flywheel or radiator. He'll do all the mods to the engine mounting and radiator hoses himself and he'll also load the 1.8 map on the computer box for me. "No management needed" he says. And that's for R18k.

So gents, I need opinions please. I have no idea which way to go. R4k is a big difference yes, but is it maybe worth it?

Get more quotes & research a bit more on your own before you make a decision

Okay I've found so far...

I can use the existing radiator with some modification done to one pipe. The temp sensor will work from my 1.4, it will kick in the same time as it does now, but will run for longer. I'm rather going to have the 1.7D radiator fitted just to be safe.

The engine mounting on the cambelt side needs to be modified. If I use the XE mounting it's an easier, stronger mod apparently.

I need the 16XE throttle which seems to be impossible to find (so far) and an adaptor plate for the intake.

I can either use my 1.4 clutch and flywheel or get a new bigger one. Which sounds better to me. I don't want to have to buy a new clutch every 6 months. My mechanic said he can get me a new 210mm clutch with a 2nd hand flywheel.

I need a new branch made for the new motor for the sensor that goes in my current manifold (can't for the life of me remember what it's called) but that's not a problem.

Current computer box can be modified to suit the XE. Just some minor splicing to be done. I'll probably add a Unichip to the mix to get the fuelling right. Depending on how much I end up with after the conversion I might even go with full management. Probably Dicktator 60-2.

Did I miss anything?

that first quote sounds good because they clearly know what they're doing despite not doing it before.

but as with any conversion, reliability cannot be guarenteed

I just feel that even though the first quote is more, I've known this mechanic for years, I've known his son for 12 years. They are Opel fanatics and don't believe in anything else but Opel. And if something goes wrong I know that he'll be open at 7am till whatever time at night to help me. The other guy I'm not too sure of. He says "it will work fine" too many times to my liking. Even though he's cheaper, I want this to be done properly. I know it won't be as reliable, but if I wanted reliable I would'nt have started fiddling with my car in the first place
