So I know all the symptoms of a dirty ICV (high revs, dificulty starting sometimes, etc) and how to fix it. But I have never done it before and I don't know what the thing looks like. So now on Sunday my mom tells me her car is revving high and I tell her to bring it over so I can sort it out. So I take out the air intake and start working on removing the throttle body (bear with me). While I'm at it, I take out what I think is the airflow meter and give it a quick clean. I look at it and wonder how this this with the spring that kind of looks like a thermostat is supposed to measure airflow, but whatever. Then I get back to trying to remove the throttle body so I can get to the "ICV" on the back (bear with me). But I don't have a small ratchet for the 10mm socket I need to remove the two bottom nuts.
So I give up after 2 hours and a lot of swearing and tell my mom I'd need to buy a small ratchet and try again this coming weekend.
And then I go on youtube to look how other folks have done it and I see that the weird "airflow meter" I cleaned was in fact the ICV and that the actual airflow meter is in the piece of piping that goes between the air filter and the throttle body.
Which means I actually did what I wanted to do 15 minutes into my 2 hour job and the other 1 hour and 45 minutes was me trying to do Lord knows what.
I felt like a complete fool, but at least I accidentally did the right job.
And this is what happens when you have lots of "book knowledge" and not much practical experience.

But no adapter so I can use the small sockets. Well, that changes tomorrow. But in hindsight I guess it was a blessing I didn't have the equipment because I might have ended up doing the headgasket too LOL.
